ADHD testing usually involves multiple components, making it a multi-step process. These steps may include clinical interviews, behavior rating scales, cognitive and achievement tests, and gathering information from teachers, parents, or partners. This thorough evaluation ensures a more precise diagnosis by considering all aspects of the individual’s life.

Clinical interviews allow a healthcare provider to understand the person’s symptoms, their severity, and how they affect various aspects of life such as school, work, or relationships. Behavior rating scales, completed by the individual or others who know them well, provide objective measures of ADHD symptoms.

Cognitive and achievement tests can help determine how ADHD may be affecting specific mental functions like attention, memory, and executive function skills. These tests also help identify any learning disabilities that often co-occur with ADHD.

By gathering this comprehensive data, ADHD testing can offer a more nuanced understanding of how the condition impacts the individual’s life. The data also provide a benchmark against which treatment progress can be measured.

Repeat testing or monitoring is a critical aspect of ADHD management. It allows healthcare providers to assess the effectiveness of the treatment strategy, which may include medications, behavioral therapies, or a combination of both. Repeat testing helps in determining whether symptoms are improving, if medication dosages need adjustment, or if alternate treatment strategies need to be considered.

In conclusion, ADHD testing is a fundamental part of diagnosing and managing ADHD. The comprehensive assessment aids in understanding the individual’s unique experience with ADHD, devising personalized treatment plans, and monitoring treatment progress. By working closely with a healthcare provider experienced in ADHD testing and management, individuals can navigate their ADHD journey more effectively and enjoy improved quality of life. As always, it’s essential to work with a licensed professional in any mental health intervention.

During the test, you will be asked to perform a 15 or 20-minute computer-based task. The task measures your ability to maintain attention and impulse control. Meanwhile, a web camera uses facial recognition technology to track your movements during the test. The test results are used to create a report which compares your performance to the performance of other people of the same sex and age, without ADHD.

The test equipment consists of a PC or Mac with a web camera. The person who will set up the test for you will make sure that:

  • Any windows and blinds are closed
  • Clutter or any visual distractions are removed
  • All other electronic devices are turned off
  • People in close proximity to the test room to remain quiet
  • Give you a seated stool without wheels or armrests (so excess movement is not recorded)

During the test, a number of symbols are shown on the computer screen. The task is to push the space bar when a certain symbol appears on the screen. The test takes 15 or 20 minutes to complete (depending on your age) and is not dependent on your language, reading, or mathematical skills. Here is a shortened version of the test so you can see how it works for both versions (6 – 11 years old and 12 – 60 years old)
